WEEK 11

Building Knowledge

LECTURE

Within this week’s lecture what was discussed was the relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. Characteristics of those terms mentioned above and how they can be represented in different ways, an example being in a business.
Also strategies for assignment work and how those terms are applied were mentioned.


TUTORIAL

TASK:
1) Our first task is was to search for four terms on the dictionary websites provided and to define those terms in our own words.

Wisdom
-After gaining a lot of knowledge you become wiser. With that wisdom you gain you can become more furthermore intellectual and have a high level of understanding of life and everything associated within it.

Knowledge
-Information we receive is added to our knowledge. It is certain things that we already have some knowledge of from experience and it is used for our learning.

Data
-Information that can be presented as facts or numbers which used for referencing and is normally performed and presented in an electronic form. Generally computers because they process a lot of data.

Information
-A collection of documents such as news, sources and factual data which can be retrieved from several places or information is services that provide material for our knowledge.


2) The second task was to create a graphical representation of these four terms by using the draw tool on MS Word. Below is what my result was once using the draw tool on MS Word as well as the words that were provided;




3) The third task was to understand the relationship between data, information and knowledge and how it can assist in university study. It is important for students to understand information to build up their own knowledge. Information and data are liked because they both provide material for our knowledge. The more information that is processed and portrayed, the higher our knowledge becomes. Therefore these terms all links together, as one builds up the next builds up and then we gain a higher level of understanding and gain more experience and information.


4) Task four was to get five organizations that collesct personal data/ifnormation from people/consumers;

Email provider's
-We can assume mostly for security reasons. Also online quiz results can be sold to sponsors and other companies to help target consumers with improved advertizing techniques.

Bank's/financial institution's- security issues eg. credit check's

Government-The government need this information for; passports, licences and wellfare systems to run efficiently

Sporting/social club's
-Advertising, contacting members and fund raising.

Organizations for Charities
-Personal information is useful when deciding who to contact.
-Money can be retrieved by selling to other companies or oragnizations.


READINGS

This reading is all about data, information, knowledge and wisdom. Both links provided are websites based around knowledge and information. Their purpose is to inform people to understand the relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. The first website provided gave an example on applying our common knowledge to finding out what a certain object was. They also provided some facts about a refrigerator; we understood what the object was because the information had established our understanding. The second website provided was created for Spring Hill College students. It teaches them information on literacy skills. It provides tutorials on the production of knowledge, organization, online searching strategies, referencing and copyright issues. The website concludes with several quizzes relating to each tutorial and its aim is to test their knowledge.
