WEEK 12

TUTORIAL

TASK:
1) For task 1 what was needed to be done was we as individuals had to go to the 'Australian copyright council' website; http://www.copyright.org.au/.

Once visiting the website we had to choose five information sheets which we thought would be relevant to us as undergraduate students.

the information sheets I chose that would be relevant for an undergraduate are:

Internet, copying & downloading material:

-Downloadable material that does not have permission from the copyright owner.
-How to get copyright protection.
-Infringing material.

Websites; creating and publishing on the internet:

-Following agreements between website designers and clients.
-Components on a website which are copyright.
-Who owns copyright when a person pays another person to design a particular website.
-Website permissions and allowances.

Music; copying MP3s, CDs, cassettes & records:

-To copy recorded music that you own is legal provided that the program it is downloaded to is your own, meaning you legally own it.
-There are particular conditions that apply before downloading music files to a certain source or computer.
-It is legal for personal use.
-It is Illegal to copy if it is not your own.

an introduction to copyright in Australia;

-General information about copyright material.
-The copyright law.
-Having copyright protects textual material, computer programs, compilations, artistic works etc.
-It explains what copyright does not protect.
-How long copyright material lasts and who owns it.

Copying photographs you have paid for;

-Moral rights.
-It is legal to make a copy for your own private or domestic use.
-Agreements with another photographer have to be followed.

2) In task to we had to visit the "APRA" website; http://www.apra.com.au/music-users/online_mobile/online_mobile.asp and then explain what you need to know about music and the web.

Below is information retrieved from the website above on what is important to know about music and the web?

With the internet providing users with websites where you can download music for free is a decline for music industries, the songwriters, artists and anyone else who becomes affected in relation to this issue. The reason as to why this is a negative effect is because they don't receive any credit for their music because people are able to download without paying, meaning the industry loses credit and money.

Several rights are exploited whenever music is being downloaded or streamed over the internet. There is an online license which is offered by APRA and AMCOS for internet/ music downloader’s to use.
APRA stands for 'Australasian Performing Rights Association', this association helps support songwriters and artists renew the industry. This is done by getting users to get permission from them if they want to use their music.
AMCOS stands for 'Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society', which gives songwriters and music artists right's for protecting their music.

Below is a screenshot of the "APRA" website:

3) Task 3 was to write a plan to protect you from attacks from your privacy and security using the following website:
http://netsecurity.about.com/
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virus6.htm
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2100282,00.asp

Protect yourself from attacks on your privacy and security from trojans;

-If somehow a Trojan is within your computer, make sure you get rid of it as soon as possible with the anti-virus program you have.
-When opening files know what you are opening and where you have retrieved them from.

Protect yourself from attacks on your privacy and security from personal information;

-When using social websites or email accounts be aware of spamming.
-Install an anti-spam program which generally blocks people or websites from spamming you.
-when sending information make sure it is always encrypted because if they are not encrypted then they may be easily accessed and read by other people.

Protect yourself from attacks on your privacy and security from viruses;

-Always be aware of attachments that are sent through emails, due to the fact that viruses can be present/occur when opening files and images that have been sent to you.
-Installing anti-virus programs onto your computer are always a positive, also make sure that you update them regularly.

LECTURE

Week 12’s lecture was all about the internet and any others issues associated with it. We were notified that the internet is sometimes open to abuse and that it doesn’t really have any standards. A major problem associated with the internet is that it can be published by anyone so information posted for viewers can be faulty and on- authentic, as well as the information provided could be unethical. People who are wise in relation to the internet are generally the ones who abuse it; an example of this is someone hacking into another person’s account. The problem associated with this issue is that the people who are not so wise tend to display personal information about themselves and this gives the wise people an advantage in taking their identity.

Other problems similar to the one mentioned above are;
-copyright breaches
-plagiarism
-security
-intellectual property
-privacy
-freedom of speech

Associated problems in relation to intellectual property is that information can be easily taken/stolen from anyone who has access to the World Wide Web. With copyright there tends to be strict laws of using certain information retrieved from somebody else. Plagiarism is a major factor, as ideas and words are taken without acknowledging the source can occur. For example privacy can be invaded; people are able to retrieve your information from places such as at a cafe' that only consists of computers.

All the above problems associated with the internet can be prevented. Installing firewalls is an excellent way of preventing harmful things occurring to your computer. Installing anti-virus programs and generally scanning as well as being aware of attachments sent through emails is always a positive.

READINGS

The first reading was "Top 12 Ways to Protect Your Online Privacy". This website provides viewers with information on 12 ways to protect online privacy when using the internet. We discover that it is unsafe for users to reveal personal information about themselves in public areas because they are in serious risk of fraud.
The first tip which was provided was never to reveal personal information. Several other tips were mentioned such as how important it is to be aware of spam; you should never reply to any spam that you may receive. Also another tip was, not to reveal personal information to people who you have just been acquainted with or strangers. It is also better to share your email addresses to a small group of people who are trustworthy. The final tip that was mentioned was to use encryption.

Within the second reading which was "Ethics in Computing - Social Justice Issues: Electronic Monitoring". This website contained information on electronic monitoring. Within the page it included five types of monitoring such as employee monitoring and workplace privacy. The monitoring covers privacy in the workplace, computer monitoring, telephone monitoring, electronic mail and voice mail, workplace privacy protections plus a list of organizations which assist employees to privacy protection. The website provides several articles about privacy issues, especially legal issues for defending employers and employees. Finally what they have provided within this reading which was taken from a website is a list of policies and privacy resources as external links and for further research/information.

The third reading is "Brown & Michaels - Overview of Intellectual Property". This reading gives a fundamental introduction on intellectual property which covers three kinds such as trademarks, patents and copyright.
Within a patent there are three types; plant patents, utility patents and design patents. Finally they have also included a brief summary about computer software’s and domain names.

WEEK 11

Building Knowledge

LECTURE

Within this week’s lecture what was discussed was the relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. Characteristics of those terms mentioned above and how they can be represented in different ways, an example being in a business.
Also strategies for assignment work and how those terms are applied were mentioned.

TUTORIAL

TASK:
1) Our first task is was to search for four terms on the dictionary websites provided and to define those terms in our own words.

Wisdom
-After gaining a lot of knowledge you become wiser. With that wisdom you gain you can become more furthermore intellectual and have a high level of understanding of life and everything associated within it.

Knowledge
-Information we receive is added to our knowledge. It is certain things that we already have some knowledge of from experience and it is used for our learning.

Data
-Information that can be presented as facts or numbers which used for referencing and is normally performed and presented in an electronic form. Generally computers because they process a lot of data.

Information
-A collection of documents such as news, sources and factual data which can be retrieved from several places or information is services that provide material for our knowledge.

2) The second task was to create a graphical representation of these four terms by using the draw tool on MS Word. Below is what my result was once using the draw tool on MS Word as well as the words that were provided;

3) The third task was to understand the relationship between data, information and knowledge and how it can assist in university study. It is important for students to understand information to build up their own knowledge. Information and data are liked because they both provide material for our knowledge. The more information that is processed and portrayed, the higher our knowledge becomes. Therefore these terms all links together, as one builds up the next builds up and then we gain a higher level of understanding and gain more experience and information.

4) Task four was to get five organizations that collesct personal data/ifnormation from people/consumers;

Email provider's
-We can assume mostly for security reasons. Also online quiz results can be sold to sponsors and other companies to help target consumers with improved advertizing techniques.

Bank's/financial institution's- security issues eg. credit check's

Government-The government need this information for; passports, licences and wellfare systems to run efficiently

Sporting/social club's
-Advertising, contacting members and fund raising.

Organizations for Charities
-Personal information is useful when deciding who to contact.
-Money can be retrieved by selling to other companies or oragnizations.

READINGS

This reading is all about data, information, knowledge and wisdom. Both links provided are websites based around knowledge and information. Their purpose is to inform people to understand the relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. The first website provided gave an example on applying our common knowledge to finding out what a certain object was. They also provided some facts about a refrigerator; we understood what the object was because the information had established our understanding. The second website provided was created for Spring Hill College students. It teaches them information on literacy skills. It provides tutorials on the production of knowledge, organization, online searching strategies, referencing and copyright issues. The website concludes with several quizzes relating to each tutorial and its aim is to test their knowledge.

WEEK 10

Information Management

TUTORIAL

TASK
1) For task one we need to use bookmarks and favourites on the internet. Our first task was to visit the website http://www.inette.com/aibtinette/favoritesI.html to complete the activities that we were given for the tutorial on how to use the favourites option on the internet.
Below a screenshot has been provided of my favourites that I created for this particular activity;

3) For task three we had to read Negroponte's famous "Being Digital" archive online at this website; http://archives.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/nn/bdcont.htm

4) After reading the "DNA of information" I came to an understanding that in our time we revolve around the information age. Although it is evident that most of the information is delivered in the form of atoms such as; newspapers, magazines and books. I personally believe that even though this was published 13 years ago, Negroponte's ideas are definately important and still relevant, basically predicting what is going to happen for the future, now.

Negroponte's ideas are still relevant because the information is current and expanding and reaching to new levels constantly. It is seen here that although atom can be considered good, it can also prove to be unreliable. You can only establish this by reading thorugh what has been provided on the website.

Negative - Atoms
-costly
-bulky

Positive - Atoms
-Physical, real-life material
-Hard copy, can create several copies copies

Negative - Bits
- easy to edit
-easy to fake

Positive - Bits

-Efficient
-Editing can occur
-Cheap, reasonable price

LECTURE

This weeks lecture consisted of ways of organising text, documents, images and webpages. We have so much information these days that managing it can be quite difficult. A good way when using the internet to manage information is by using bookmarks and putting them into relevant folders. Information is either atom-based or bit-based.

-Using a file manager or using bookmarks.
-Problems associated with managing information, the positives and negatives.

Atom based - Pros: easily concealed, hard to alter and copy.
Cons: costly, difficult to edit, easily stolen and damaged.
Bit Based - Pros: cheap, flexible, easy to edit.
Cons: easy to access & copy, difficult to notify whether it's
authentic or not.

-Digital Reproductions, the positives and negatives.
-Internet banking, music and email
-Using search tools

READINGS

The readings "Grazing the Net" is an article aimed at students as more of the information provided by the site is mroe relevant to them. The image presented was of a chicken this was used to put forward the true meaning of "free range students", like "free range eggs". Viewers/students need to acknowledge why it is important to collect and organise a large amount of information the reason is so that we as students learn how to manage information whihc is all over the places.

WEEK 9

TUTORIAL

TASK:
1)What term did you enter and what group did you find.
I entered into the google group the word "Mobiles" and the group I found was anything related to mobile phones such as; types of phones, plans and other things that relate to this topic.

2)What was found once searching the word "Mobiles" in google group, was messages and bulletins that had information from people wanting to purchase or get respsonses on what type of phones are good to use within reasonable prices. Also their is information on what certain phines can provide people with and so forth.

3) Below is a screenshot of the website; http://podcasts.yahoo.com/. After visiting this website I entered the topic of my choice which was "Mobile Phones" after this what was displayed was the below screenshot:

LECTURE

In today's lecture, the main topic was "Communications". We were introduced to the propiety of emailing and sending text messages, as well as anything relating to these two issues.
In some cases this form of communication has taken over from phoning and in most cases it has taken over from letters.
Within the lecture a fact which was indicated to us was that emailing has taken over from telephoning in the current years. This is due to the informality of messages sent via sms and email. With this their is always a possibility of a message being sent, misinterpreted by the reciever. Which brings poeple to eb aware of that point which is that we as users need to follow a certain protocol whilst using particuklar types of communication such as emailing an via sms.

READINGS

Reading one which is “Guide to using e-mail” is all about emails and how to use what they can offer. People have been educated on how to write to other people in a correct format whether it is through a letter, email or journal. Emails that are received in current times can be the subject of abbreviations and people being slack. When people use emails services they tend to use abbreviations which can sometimes be misinterpreted by the receiver/viewer as they might not notify what the sender is implying. When sending something such as an email or letter the subject of your email is absolutely essential because it is the first thing the reader/viewer acknowledges. If people notify it and believe it isn’t important they tend to not even open it but instead delete it as soon as possible. The tone of your writing is also important; don’t use capital letters because it indicates you are aggressive towards the recipient. Address the reader formally if you do not have a close relationship with them, this shows courtesy.

The second reading is all about problems with spam. The website; http://www.caube.org.au/problem.htm discusses the issues relating to spam, and encourages the reader to deem this issue to be more important than society would normally think it as. Within the site you can acknowledge there are many perspectives provided from which spam e-mails are an issue and that they affect the internet society. Overall, the website is structured in order to notify the importance of spam emails and provides a comprehensive argument on the disadvantages of spam.

WEEK 8

TUTORIAL

In relation to this weeks workshop on power point presentations the following displayed below is the top five constructive hints on how to make a good presentation:

1) Make sure that your presentation contains persuasive information so that you will keep your audience focused on the information you are providing them with and so they won't get bored easily or side tracked.

2) Make sure that you are prepared and ready to present early or before due date just in case. If you are ready earlier you are able to practice your completed presentation several times. Also by being prepared early you can practice not only your speech but you can also ensure that any extra presentation bits such as your actual powerpoint is ready to go and that your USB is functioning properly.

3) Make sure you provide tyour audience with appropriate information depending on your topic.

4) A good presenter is one who:
-stands upright and projects their body language appropriatly
-doesn't move around
-sounds confident
-someone who knows their topic well, you can notify this in an individual by seeing how they project the information to an audience
- gives themselves enough time to complete the task and effectively research the topic

5) Encourage the audience to participate in some manner, whether it be by getting the audience to ask questions, answer questions. (it is known that audience members who remember 60% of what they see interacIively are ones who are full involved in your presentation in a good way)

2) BELOW ARE SCREENSHOTS OF THE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION THAT HAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED FOR THIS TASK;

LECTURE
The several issues which were discussed during this weeks lecture was all things related to "Presentation Strategies". there are many presentations that can be made to be presented such as PowerPoint, essays, papers, web-pages videos and so forth.

The structure of a presentation is:

-introduction
-body
-conclusion (summary)
INTRODUCTION:
-attention getters (key words)
-thesis statement
-audience interactions
-statement leading to my body
BODY:
-main ideas
-organisation patterns
-references as to outside information contained within the presentation
CONCLUSION:
-Reinforce thesis statement (elaborate)
-review what what discussed briefly throughout body
-close with an effective ending sentence

When doing a presentation aids in your assessment are always a plus. These aids should be related to your presentation topic and should have a purpose. Another positive effect in a presentation is getting the audience involved somehow, asking questions always help. In order to keep your audience focused always use eye contact, palm cards that way your not reading off them and speak clearly and at a suitable volume level.

WEEK 7

TUTORIAL

In today’s tutorial we reviewed the online referencing guide and had to include five examples of electronic format material that are referenced. Then we had to complete the endnotev11 Exercises for vista. Then we completed the Cite while also writing the Endnote activity once this was done we had to save the Cite while we were writing the exercise and captured several screenshots of it and included it in our week 11 blog entry.

We then configured and installed endnote, and learnt how to add information into endnote to make references. We added information from a book, a web page and a journal article and we made a reference for each in endnote and saved it into our endnote library that we made.

LECTURE

Today's lecture was based on the program Endnote. Endnote is a program to manage your references that you obtain through your research. There is a reference manager that is scalable and search able. You can also create bibliography's in Endnote which references your information for you. With Endnote you can complete the required fields and then it will automatically place these references onto your document where you need them.
Endnote can be a resourceful tool for students who may have problems referencing in the correct manner.
This program can be used in two ways, first you can use it as a reference manager for a research project or a specific assessment. The other way in which it can be used is to us it into MS word which is a bibliography manager for one particular assignment.
Also mentioned during the lecture as well as the tutorial was information on referencing and how extremely important it is for a university student.

WEEK 6

TUTORIAL

During this week’s tutorial once visiting the website; http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think.html, which has strategies for evaluating the information found in websites we had to briefly describe these strategies in our own words.

TASK:
1) I have gathered that the strategies provided are useful such as knowing whether your source is resourceful and authentic. On this website it provides tips on finding out whether the webpage or source you are using is worthwhile and is providing truthful information and not just someone putting their personal opinions and thoughts on a website.

After this I visited another website which was: http://www.taftcollege.edu/newTC/Academic/INCO48/sec6-4.htm this website also explains how to evaluate internet sources. I discovered this website more useful than the other website as it has much more understanding.
Another website I sited was: http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html. This website was definitly the best out of all three as why also giving suggestions on how to evaluate it also provides examples of this; it also explains the same information to help me with evaluating.

2) http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decade60.html, after visiting this website I have acknowledged that the precision of this website wasn't satisfying as there wasn’t enough information to support what was presented. It was recently updated but it was created in 1999 which means a significant amount of the information won't be relevant or recent. Another factor would be that considering it was a lecture the information could have also been biased. The sites purpose is to inform people about the sixties. The detail and design is very plain and simple but very accessible and easy to navigate. The information is quite brief mainly using quotes and photos to inform people.
http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/lectures/lecture27.html, this website I went on was a lot more interesting and exciting, the design and detail was a lot more colourful and interesting making me want to read it. I thought the accuracy was not very good as it was last updated 2006 making information not so recent. The author of the page was Susan Goodwin which doesn’t explain who she is but there is contact information to find out more about her. The purpose is to inform people about the American culture of the sixties. The information is quite thorough and interesting also.

3) The third task was to complete the "Reliving the Sixties" website evaluation assignment. We had to choose two websites and then evaluate the authenticity of them using some of this criteria; accuracy, authorship, purpose, detail and design, overall worth.

American Cultural History: 1960 - 1969

Evaluation:
This site is very intriguing; it is an insight into what it was like during the 1960's. It’s very authentic, and it provides a detailed outlook of the lifestyle of those who were present during the 1960's. The accuracy of the website seems to be fair. The information on the site is highly detailed with links to certain pages that verifies the information on the site. The authors seem quite reliable as they are from the Kingwood college library. Furthermore this shows it’s reliability and that it is appropriate, so this would be a good website to visit if you were wanting to inquire about the 1960's, however not all the events of the sixties are included on the page.

Questions:

Do you have adequate reason to believe that the information provided on the website is accurate?
The information on the site is accurate as there are quite a number of links that leads to pages that verifies the information being presented and shown.

Was the page worth visiting? Is this site a high-quality source of information you were looking for?
Yes this site is an excellent and useful source for the information needed, it has a brief introduction of the 1960's and specific information facts about America such as; population, national debt, salary, life expectancy and mortality rate/death rate. It does provide me with all the information that I should have e.g. providing information such as Art and Architecture, Books and Literature, Education, Fashion, Historical Events and Technology, Music, Film, Radio, Television and sports all with the 1960's.

Who are the author(s) and who is responsible for the site? What is their bias?
The author of the site is John R. Henderson and the organization responsible is the Kingwood College Library. Their expertise is critical thinking teaching people how to be critical thinkers. Their bias is they tell the story from their opinion.

Was this page designed for the Web?
This page was designed for the web but also to inform people about what the 1960's lifestyle was like during that time.

A Trip Through The Sixties:

Evaluation:
This website does not seem legitimate as the website appears to present false details. However the accuracy of the information is quite accurate, appropriate and relevant. The site is relatively detailed and has numerous links to different sections and areas of the site. The purpose of the site is to provide information to people looking for information about the 60's. Therefore the site appears to have useful information to be browsed through.

Questions:

Do you have adequate reason to believe that the information provided on the website is accurate?
There are references to other books to verify its authenticity.

Was the page worth visiting? Is this site a high-quality source of information you were looking for?
The site is indeed a good source of information as it provides a number of events and lifestyles of the 1960's. The site is a useful and pleasant page to visit if you want to find out about interesting facts of the 1960's.

Who are the author(s) and who is responsible for the site? What is their bias?
There are no specific authors indicated on the page, however the organization domain name Hippy would be responsible for the site. Generally speaking you can assume their biased due to the way that they call themselves hippy experts, meaning they are telling it from their point of view.

What is the site's purpose?
The purpose of the site is to provide information about the events and lifestyles of the 1960's.

Was this page designed for the Web?
The page was designed for the web and also to provide vital information about the events and everyday lifestyles of the people living in the 60's.

LECTURE

This week’s lecture had information involving "evaluation and authentication". The lecturer discussed true and false information as well as any issues or information involving the 'www', World Wide Web. Such information discussed that concerned the World Wide Web was the history of it and what it means in today’s society. Main issue discussed was Evaluating IQ on the 'www'. Overall the lecture was based on whether we as students can identify if a webpage is resourceful and authentic or not. In order to know if it is or not, you must consider background information ont he website and the author itself. Also by just scanning and browsing through the page to see if the information seems safe and useful.

WEEK 5

TUTORIAL

TASK:
1) Four strategies that will you help you conduct a good search are:

1. Always use key phrases, try to use as little words as you can in your search
2. Using " " and the words 'and ', and so forth speed up your search and minimise the sources that will show up
3. Using simple words in between the main key words you are searching in your search engine
4. Google and Yahoo are recommended on being the two best search engines to use

2) After doing the trivia quiz on the website “http://www.siteseen.co.uk/questions/historytrivia/" I received my results and I got all my questions right. Due to the tips I used when using a search engine to find the information I am looking for. Below is a screen shot of my results page from the trivia website.

The strategies I used in order to retrieve the information I was looking for in relation to the questions from the trivia game. I used question marks after I type in my key phrases within my search engine. I used Google mostly but when Google could not give me the information i required i then used yahoo. I used simple words like 'and', 'the' and other punctuation forms to make my search provide me with the information I want as quickly as possible without having to go through several websites.

What was mentioned during week 5's lecture was all information on search engines and the different types. Briefly discussed was the three types of categories of information on the web which are; visible, invisible and paid databases were informed that most people use Google or yahoo as search engines in most cases. We also now know the problems that associate with search engines and the interaction of the many search engines available. The lecturer summed up by giving us some search tips and places in which we will find useful search tips such as in the readings provided.

READINGS
The readings for week 5 basically demonstrate particular internet search tips and strategies. These tips are meant to help us students to use the World Wide Web in a resourceful way because the web has a large quantity of information and it should be used in certain ways in order to receive useful and narrowed down information that suits the student’s needs.

The second reading was more based on search engines. Similar readings were viewed in week four. The "search engines" readings provides information on how to use directories on the net and how to find particular information on the net and vibrant databases that will provide people/students with research information.

In the third reading the site informs the readers of the SEO ( Search Engine Optimisation) analysis which constantly monitors information such as web addresses that are generated, and fine tunes them making them higher ranking thus appearing in search engines as compared to some sites that are left out.

WEEK 4

TUTORIAL

TASK:
1) The first task was to visit the websites provided and identify their authenticity. This website; http://www.haggishunt.scotsman.com/ is definitely a fake website. It shows an image of a creature, called Haggis( a mouse like platypus). From my personal knowledge and basic research, I know Haggis is a traditional Scotland dish. Another obvious fact that gave me an impression that the website is not authentic and that it is fake is that the information included within the website is mainly false information being repeated and fact information. An example of how this site provides useless information is that it talks about hunting for haggis. Even the website title gives an impression to the viewer that the website is faulty. On the top left page of haggis hunt.com there is a information box, showing facts about the haggis.

The website http://www.molossia.org/ is also a fake website. This is because it is very plain and simple, meaning it doesn't provide a user with much further use. Towards the right hand side of the page there is an image of a man wearing a uniform similar to a captain or navy sergeant. Clicking through the links displayed on the website also indicate it's fraud. Images within the website were very fake and basic, not at a high graphical representation. The images were obviously taken by a home digital camera and then posted onto the website. The person standing in the image on the main page is suppose to be the president of molossia. By viewing this carefully, the background seems to be a front yard of a house. Obvious judgement that the website is fake, the man is playing the role of a president.

2, 3, 4) The second activity consisted of us seeing a website and writing down what we think the website will consist of/be about. The website given is this; "http://www.martinlutherking.org/". I believe that this website will provide people with information on Martin Luther King, who he was, what he did that made a change to people around him and his own personal life history. Once i entered the Martin Luther King website my first impressions were that this website offered a lot of useful information on Martin Luther King. Many links were portrayed on the page such as; Historical writings, truth about king, death of the dream, the king holiday, civil rights library, Jews and civil rights, suggested book. Under each of the above mentioned links are more sources and information. After using the search engine Google and researching other resourceful website on Martin Luther King i have come to the conclusion that the original site provided isn't as useful as some of the other website provided through Google. This is due to the fact that other sites offer more information basically on his life story, where as the original site offer speeches, articles and so forth. Overall the website given which was; http://www.martinlutherking.org/. It does contain useful information although other sites can provide the same information.

Below is a screenshot of the Martin Luther King website; www.martinlutherking.org

LECTURE

This lecture mainly discussed the internet and what the web/www really means. We were informed that the internet you find computers where as on the web you find documents, videos, sounds and information. We discovered the historical aspects such as who created the web/internet. Also that for some people who didn't know that www stands for 'world wide web', but I’m sure 99% of people knew this. The web is accessible for anyone anywhere who has a computer and the internet.

READINGS

Reading one which is "A brief history of the internet" discusses the origin of the internet and how it became. Many links are provided in the website/reading. Through the readings are dates of when the internet became and other things that relate to the internet and its origin. Also the information on the electronic part of how the internet was physically made through a computer, what changes to the original computer needed to be done.

The second reading which was; “History Of The Internet, Internet For Historians" is about the communication and transmission of data between computers. The internet is a connection that allows other computers to communicate with one another through websites, chat rooms and other programs offered by the internet. The development of computers have advanced worldwide in the current years. In 1844, the first communication device was invented, sending through electronic impulses to other devices. In 1961, a sharing system was introduced, giving users the ability to use the same programs and softwares while in different locations.

WEEK 3

TUTORIAL

During this week’s tutorial all UPCOOO4 students had to create 10 tips in which will help people/current students when looking for articles, books references etc while using the ecu library website. With these useful tips below that each student created, this will enable other students to gain and access information from the online ecu library at a faster rate, due to them knowing how to comfortably use the ecu online library.

Using this ecu library website: http://www.ecu.edu.au/library/

Steps/Tips in finding information on the online ecu library:
1) Depending on what type of information you a trying to find is the link you click on, on the ECU library website. For example if you are trying to find a journal article you would click on the link "journal article", then a heading of "I want to find journal articles using library databases . . . " will appear and underneath this will be other links on finding different journal articles. This process appears for all of the types of information you want to find.

2) When entering the topic you are looking for in the correct area, make sure you enter your topic correctly and use key words this will further advantage you in your research. By using key words this will enable you to find the precise information rather than other information/references appearing on the website.

3) After entering in the key words in which you are searching for, below on the same page are two boxes which you can choose to tick or not to tick. Basically these boxes can restrict the type of response you get once you start searching the key words you have entered into the specific area.

4) Before beginning your research a good idea would be to have all your information out in a visible place or if your information that is going to help you with your research is on the computer have your documents open, this will keep you on track an guide you when trying to find your information while researching through the online ecu library.

5)Another useful tip would also be that if the words that you have entered aren't coming up with the appropriate or useful information in which you want, then break down what your topic is about and try entering other words which are linked towards your topic. This will then bring familiar information to the viewer.

6) When you are searching for a book, Cd or journal article, just by typing in the keyword, subject, author, title or exam papers, information on what you are looking for will come up in an instant.

7) Tips in finding information on a certain topic through search engines and the ecu online library are that you can use either quotations marks [".."] or using the word "and" between keywords, this will give you specific feedback in response to your topic and will also narrow your information down.

8) An obvious tip would be to use proper spelling and vocabulary when searching for your required information. If a word is spelt incorrectly then you could receive other information that is nowhere near the topic you are trying to find specific information for.

9) When you are searching for a website through the online ECU library you know that you will receive recommended sources at a faster rate and it will be more reliable than other search engines such as Google or yahoo.

10) When searching for articles use references to locate the actual article.

Above is a screen shot of the ecu library website which with the 10 tips above will help you find the information you need

2) The second activity for the workshop/tutorial was to say what type of people would use the website; http://www.medlineplus.gov/.

In my opinion the people who would most prefer to use a website like this would be people who are sick, meaning they could be suffering from one the conditions that you can find information on, throughout this website. Also family members who have had past experiences or are currently having to deal with people they know and care about having a certain sickness. Generally most type of people mentioned above come to this type of website to be more familiar with the actual sickness that they know of someone having or them having it themself.

Other people who might refer to this website is doctors or nurses just wanting to check up on certain things that they may have forgotten or have not been informed about.

Above is a screenshot of medline.com. This is the website in which was discussed about on what type of people would use it and find it useful.

LECTURE

What were discussed were online libraries and databases which were briefly mentioned in the tutorial. We were informed on why we should use online libraries their advantages and their disadvantages, one point stood out to me which was an advantage which was that online libraries and databases are reachable 24/7 at anytime and at anyplace in which has a computer and the internet. Briefly mentioned was the types of online libraries available; text resporities, journals, electronic books and so forth. An example of a type of online library is http://www.vlib.org/. Near the end of the lecture we were notified about copyright in relation to online libraries and their resources and correct referencing which is important especially in ECU.

READINGS

In reading one "Finding what you want on the web" we discover that "Google" is a very handy and resourceful website. Without Google searching for certain topics and so forth would be much harder and different search engines would have to be used. Bill Thompson who wrote 'reading one' from the BBC news website also informs us on other search engines but he comes to the conclusion that some of the information comes from Google as well. For example using the search engine "yahoo" when information comes up some of it comes directly from Google.

In reading two "Basic search tips" we are notified on May useful search tips when entering our keywords of what we are looking for into say Google for example. An example of a useful search tip mentioned on this 'USC Beaufort library website' is Using the plus + and minus - signs in front of words to force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches.

WEEK 1

TUTORIAL

During week one workshop we familiarised ourselves with the ecu homepage as well as blackboard, which we now know is a very useful resource for every unit in this course. We established how to use our student emails, this was done by sending test emails. We then began our first activity/assessment which is our "blog" by making a blogger account and an imageshack or photobucket account. As a class we discussed what was needed within this blogger which was a summary of our notes from our UPCOOO4 lecture, what we did in our workshop for that day and a short summary of the readings for that lesson. We then were told that this must be continued every week and so a weekly posting must occur. Before we left the turtorial we were told that our blog must of been completed for week 1 and that it would be checked in week 2.

LECTURE

Through the lecture many things were discussed but in detail an introductory on university life was mentioned in depth. Learning outcomes were mentioned, showing the university standard of work that should be developed by 'us' unviersity students. Helen introduced us into what UPOOO4 is about and the many things that will be worked on during this course/unit. Basically indicating that computers will be used every week, especially with assessments as well as that it is critical for us to know how to use them well and being independent when completing assessments.

We were informed on assessment content and the percentage of our assessments and exams. This will indicated what each piece of work will be worth overall during the unit.
Plagiarism was mentioned several times due to it being extremely important for university students NOT TO DO, consequences are severe.
